The government has established two new dumping sites for garbage collected from Kampala City following the collapse of waste pies in Kiteezi, which killed over 30 people and destroyed property.
This decision was resolved during a high-level meeting chaired by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga, at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
According to Kadaga, the two new dumping sites include Katikolo in Mukono municipality and Menvu in Nansana Division.
During the same meeting, the government also announced an interim solid waste management plan for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
It was determined that Katabi in Entebbe, which had earlier been allocated to receive the garbage from Kampala, is ill-equipped to handle the substantial volume of waste from the Greater Kampala area.
The meeting also tasked the Ministry of Works to promptly deploy equipment to improve road access to the new disposal sites, while KCCA will initiate operations at the Menvu landfill.
The government, on the other hand, has come up with a resettlement plan for residents displaced by the Kiteezi landfill, which will be commissioned for redevelopment by the KCCA in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Urban Development.
Under this arrangement, the government intends to relocate individuals from the 200-meter buffer zone at Kiteezi to alternative land in Ddundu, Mukono.
KCCA urges all residents of Kampala to adhere to the “3 Rs” of waste management, which include: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
“Disposal of waste in unauthorized areas is prohibited. Together, let’s strive for a cleaner, smarter city,” KCCA noted.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Local Government, Rafael Magezi, Minister for Kampala Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, General Katumba Minister for Works and Transport, and KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka.
