The Presidential Press Unit has, in the strongest terms, appealed to the general public to disregard the fake letter making rounds in the media with the subject “Expression of interest to dispose of 40,000 metallic tones of copper, Cathodes from Kilembe mines.”
In a statement released by Farouk Kirunda, the Deputy Press Secretary to the President, on August 29, 2023, he has appealed to the general public to disregard the fake information on the said subject that was released on December 7, 2022, and addressed to Team Investment Limited.
“The letter was purportedly written by Kenneth Omona, the principal private secretary to the president of the Republic of Uganda, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” said Kirunda.
He noted that the letter is fake, has spelling mistakes notwithstanding, and should therefore be treated with the contempt it deserves.
The fake letter alleges that the President had authorised the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, together with the attorney general, to work with Steam Investment Limited so that the process is carried out in a streamlined manner.
Kilembe Mines is Uganda’s largest copper mine, with estimated deposits of copper in excess of 4,000,000 metric tonnes and an undetermined amount of cobalt ore. In addition, there are approximately 2,800 acres (1,100 ha) of unexplored acreage at the site.
