Former Minister of Cooperative and Marketing, Yona Bankobeza Kanyomozi has passed on at Nakasero Hospital, Kampala aged 82 years.
The veteran politician has been battling cancer for a long time.
Kanyomozi was the Minister of Cooperatives and Marketing in Obote II government.
Mzee Yona, as he is mostly called served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly in Arusha in the early years of the re-established East African Community.
Mzee Kanyamozi taught President Museveni Mathematics at Junior Secondary School after his O-level.
During one of his media interviews, the deceased once he must remembered as a principled politician who was concerned about the ordinary people.
“This is what formed my drive for Co-operatives because they bridge the gap of democratic participation, stand for my socialist ideals, promote sense of ownership and that has guided my outlook to politics and life in general,” He said in one of the interviews.
He is a step brother to former army commander and now party president of Alliance for National Transformation, Maj. Mugisha Muntu.
Kanyomozi was born in June 29, 1940 in Kajara, Ankole region and the son of Zakayo Kamugaruire Bwanugu and Tofasi Rwemagye (Mari) Bashorora.
He is a legend in Uganda People’s Congress (UPC)
