The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among has been elected to succeed late Hon. Jacob Oulanyah as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
In an election held at Kololo Independence ground and was presided over by the Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny Dollo, Among also the Bukedea woman Mp (NRM) beat her opponent with a whopping 401 votes against her opponent, Basalirwa Asuman who got 66 Votes.
A total of 568 legislators participated in the election of the speaker of parliament.
She was declared the winner by Chief Justice Owiny at exactly 14:54 hours.
Among who previously deputized late Oulanyah from May last year is the second female legislator to be elected the full Speaker of Parliament after Rebecca Kadaga that held the seat for 10 years.
She was nominated by the Prime Minister, Robina Nabanja, and subsequently seconded by the Ajuri County Mp, Denis Hamson Obua also the Minister of state for sport.
Before the election had started, some opposition legislators demanded that a vehicle belonging to the Presidential motorcades mounted with cameras be driven away from the ground to allow legislators to independently elect the new Speaker.
But their attempts proved futile when CJ Owiny advised them to turn their back to the Camera since it can’t penetrate through bodies.
Electing Among as the New Speaker has caused the position of the deputy speaker to be vacant as was announced by the Clerk to parliament immediately after Anite was declared speaker.
