The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)-Katonga faction has formed a new political party known as the Defiance Coalition Uganda (DCU), spearheaded by Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The move comes as FDC seeks to strengthen its position in Uganda’s political landscape in preparation for the Uganda’s political landscape. It’s also as a result of the ongoing challenges within the party that saw it split into two factions earlier, FDC Najjankumbi and FDC Katonga.
According to sources within the Katonga faction, the new party is set to be unveiled during the delegates conference meeting that will be held next week in Kampala.
“Dr. Besigye outlined the coalition’s objectives, emphasizing a commitment to promoting defiance leadership in order to remove the current government of the NRM, which has compromised the current FDC,” the source said.
Dr. Besigye stated that the Defiance Coalition Uganda has been born out of the need for a united front and that it will combine all those that don’t agree with the FDC Najjankumbi, government, and other political parties.
However, in response to the Katonga faction’s decision, Jack Sabiti of the FDC Najjankumbi said that Dr. Besigye is doing all these to just seek relevancy, as he has literally nothing new to offer Ugandans in terms of politics.
“Besigye is a failed politician whose aim is to just continue causing confusion in politics and create more different groups that will work in favor of the NRM,” Sabiti said.
He further said that if indeed Besigye was interested in changing the political system of Uganda, he would not have worked hard to cause the split of FDC in the first place.
“Imagine due to Besigye’s selfishness and desire to always be in charge, we are likely to end up with four groups broken from FDC, that is, Najjankumbi, Katonga, Defiance Coalition Uganda, and another group that doesn’t belong to either of the three,” Sabiti added.
He challenged Ugandans to ask themselves if indeed such a man is interested in change, yet he has kept causing confusion among the opposition to the extent of forging failed coalitions with other political parties.
“We should not pretend not to notice Besigye’s intentions and trends in coalitions with different political parties that never work, causing chaos within the FDC itself to the extent of splitting it into four groups,” Sabiti said.
Political experts have weighed this new move by Dr. Besigye and said that if they were poaching supporters from NRM, it would make a great difference; unfortunately, they have been poaching from fellow political opposition parties and have now resorted to poaching from within the party itself.
According to the political experts, this is not leading Besigye closer to the chair but far from it. Instead of solving internal wraggles, they are splitting further. Maybe a question to ponder: What change can be brought out of that?
