BREAKING: Gov’t directs all schools to close for 3rd term holidays in two weeks

The government has ordered all schools to close for third term holidays in two weeks.

In a letter dated, November 8th,2022 and signed by the Minister of Education and sports, also the First lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, all schools are required to break off by November, 25th 2022 for third term holidays.

Schools have also been directed to conduct final exams effective next week, all the school administration will also be required to decontaminate all school facilities and make them safe for the children’s return next year in 2023.

“The Ministry of Education and sports together with ministry of works and transport will issue guidelines on measures to follow during transportation of learners in order to avoid congestion at bus and taxi parks,” the letter reads.

The decision was approved by Cabinet on Monday following a proposal by Ministry of health to decongest schools to avoid increasing vulnerability of children to Ebola Virus Disease infections.

According to Ministry of Education, closing schools earlier will reduce areas of concentration where children are in daily close contact with fellow children, teachers and other staff who could potentially spread the Virus.

On 26th October 2022, Ministry of Health confirmed that there were 6 cases in school going children who attended classes at three different schools in Rubaga Division in Kampala city.

According to Ministry of health, a total of 23 Ebola cases have been confirmed among children and eight have died while 16 are undergoing isolation and five have fully recovered.
