Agriculture And Other Productive Activities Can Rescue The Youths From Poverty, Not Politics

The youths living in the Central reign have for long been taken advantage of by politicians especially from the opposition. All new political movements come with promises of the promised land for the youths but what many are trying to do is find any easy way to attain their goals. Leadrs like Besigye had to ride on the youths to make the core of their campaign and some like Sam Mugumya were misled into armed rebellion and ended up in jail in Ngora, DRC.

Bobi Wine has done the same too. Every day he calls upon the youth to rally behind him during his campaigns and whenever he goes for court sessions. As a local youth leader, his focus should be on how to create opportunities for these youths especially those living in the urban areas.

Other youth have been driven towards foreign labour agencies that promise good pay abroad only to find mistreatment and harsh labour conditions. The more unfortunate women are treated like slaves and others forced into prostitution.

Agriculture offers a way out for those that are more open minded. Rather than sell their ancestral land, the youths can try out modern zero grazing projects to look after cattle with limited acreage which still yields large quantities of milk that has urban market demand.

The Buganda kingdom has also launched a new campaign dubbed ‘Emwani Telimba’ which aims to oversee the growth and production of high quality coffee for export. The project will provide guidance and has called upon the politicians to provide seeds for the people in the area. They will also buy all the coffee produced from the initiative.

Such endeavors mean that there is little time for people to blame government for their misfortunes and focus more on getting themselves out of poverty. This way, the politicians will be challenged to come up with more innovative manifestos rather than the shallow promises of redemption.
