Maj. Gen. James Birungi has praised the strong bilateral relations between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a recent statement, the military leader highlighted the importance of the two countries working together to address common challenges and promote regional stability. Birungi’s comments come amid ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Uganda and its neighbors, including the DRC.
Maj. Gen. Birungi discussed topics of shared security interests with a delegation from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Kampala.
“Indeed, the relations between the DRC and Uganda are strong and commendable. So, with no doubt, we will continue to grow from strength to strength to meet the aspirations of our people,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of the meeting, which comes at a time when the two countries are faced with serious security challenges ranging from terrorism, transnational and cross-border crime, and humanitarian crises, including the refugee burden, among others.
Maj. Gen. Birungi added that the recommendations from the meeting will guide the strategic leadership of both countries to come up with workable solutions that address the common security challenges faced by Uganda and the DRC.
Maj. Gen. Ndaywel Christian Okura, the Intelligence Chief of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stated in his remarks that only Africans can solve Africa’s problems, and he added that the dynamic strength between Uganda and the DRC will be crucial in addressing the region’s security needs.

Maj. Gen. Ndaywel has also expressed his condolences to the people of Uganda in the aftermath of the unfortunate attack on Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe, Kasese District, on June 16th, 2023, carried out by suspected Allied Democratic Forces rebels, which took the lives of 38 pupils and 5 others.
