Ministry of Health yesterday said that no Ugandan will be forced to take part in the trials of the ebola vaccine, an exercise slated to start in two weeks. The Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng made the remarks at Parliament while responding to a question posed by Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe (Majiya County) who tasked the Ministry of Health to explain if the trials on the new Ebola virus will entail seeking the consent of participants.

The spokesperson of Uganda prisons, Mr. Frank Mayanja Baine stated that government in conjunction with Uganda Prisons has suspended visitations in all prisons units in the country. “As q result of the outbreak of Ebola virus, visitation of all Prisons units, court and community work is suspended, Referral of sick prisoners outside the prisons health system is suspended and all the above take immediate effect,” Baine said.

Alll head teachers and directors are asked to desist from asking parents to pick their children from schools as this could lead to a wide spread of the disease.

A group of researchers have created an information, communication, and technology (ICT) system to manage antimicrobial resistance and track antibiotic consumption in livestock, beginning with the chicken business. The researchers came from COVAB-Makerere University, the International Livestock Research Institute Kenya (ILRI), the University of Nairobi, and the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences (SLU).

In a meeting that took place at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, the president and the Kyabazinga discussed key issues concerning the development of Busoga Kingdom. Among the key issues discussed was the return of more Busoga kingdom property by the central government.

The Kasese Municipal Authorities together with police have temporarily closed an illegal and offensive business of hides and skins on the second Street, industrial area and subsequently arrested its Manager. The notice of closure that was signed by the Town Clerk, Mr. Theophilus Tibihika, indicated that the business which has been operating for now seven months and belongs to Mr. Farook Basajjabalaba does not have a license, contrary to section 8 of the Trade Licensing Act.

Director e-Government Services at National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U), Mr. Collin Babirukamu, yesterday held a meeting with Uganda Tourism Board team led by the Executive Director Lilly Ajarova in a bid to digitally boost the sector. The government of Uganda has denied supporting the M23 rebels, who earlier this year seized the strategic border town of Bunagana, saying bilateral relations with both neighbors remained “strong” and “warm.” “Our relationship with FARDC (Congolese army) and the President of DRC and his Cabinet are warm,” said Uganda government Spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) 3rd Division Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Balikudembe revealed that over 390 guns have been recovered from criminal elements in Karamoja region. He further warned Karamojong pastoralists to stop burning grass in the Sub-region. He said this does not only waste the environment but also increases security threats in the region as pastoralists wonder to secure fresh pasture in the new unburnt areas. Brig Gen Balikudembe made this call while on a radio talk show hosted by Mr. Moses Logwe on Monday at UBC Moroto station.

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa stated that the Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station, once completed, will boost Uganda’s electricity generation capacity to 2,000 megawatts. Masaka City on Wednesday recorded its first Ebola death after one of the two patients earlier admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital succumbed to the deadly virus hours after being evacuated to Entebbe treatment centre. According to the hospital principal administrator, Mr. Charles Tumushime, the female victim first suffered a miscarriage as she was receiving treatment at St. Joseph’s Clinic in Kimaanya, Masaka City before she was referred to the regional health facility in critical condition.

A senior six student of Bukoyo Secondary School in Iganga district committed suicide days to final examination. The student committed suicide by hanging yesterday in the dormitory after getting reminder to go home to collect fees balance. This boy had not cleared fees for two terms. It is alleged that he also dodged mocks and whenever they rounded and reminded him to go for fees, he would move out and later sneak in until today when he was rounded up again and instead of dashing home, he decided to look for a mosquito net and hanged himself in the school dormitory.

Four people including a Kenya trailer driver yesterday perished in a nasty road accident along Hoima – Wanseko road in Buliisa district. The Waaki East Village LC1 Chairperson Geofrey Ukumu said that the incident happened at Waaki bridge.”The trailer ferrying a container failed to negotiate the sharp corner at the river hence knocking two road users dead and then rammed into the Waaki river waters,” he said.

Kenyan police said attackers suspected to be members of the Al-Shabab rebel group in Somalia have abducted two paramedics, a driver and a patient near Kenya’s border with Somalia. The attackers ambushed an ambulance belonging to the regional county government of Mandera, in the Kenya’s northeast, as it transported the patient to a hospital in the county.

The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC has withdrawn troops from the eastern military base of Rumangabo, ceding ground in the battle against the M23 rebel group.

A court in Myanmar has handed a 148 year prison sentence to a former parliamentarian from the deposed National League for Democracy (NLD) party, adding to a previous conviction which will now see Win Myint Hlaing, 52, spend a total of 173 years in prison.
The sentence, which was handed down to Win Myint Hlaing after his conviction on terrorism charges, appeared to be the longest jail term given to any member of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government and NLD party since the military grabbed power in February 2021.
