🇺🇬Government edifies traditional healers on the dangers of Ebola

📌The Ministry of Health in partnership with the United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) and World Health Organization (WHO) have started training traditional healers on the dangers of Ebola. The training follows reports that many people have been running to traditional healers in the districts of Kassanda and Mubende for medical attention. The traditional healers have been given soap, temperature guns and radios to help spread the gospel about the dangers of Ebola.

📌The government has affirmed support to the Fisheries sector as a second leading foreign exchange earner for Uganda’s economy. According to President Museveni, the sector employs more than eighty million Ugandans, fetching approximately 154 million US Dollars in foreign exchange annually. 🇺🇬Hotel owners, tourism board sign MOU to rebuild the hospitality sector

📌During the signing of a Memorandum of understanding for ensuring continuity of joint efforts between the Uganda Hotel Owners Association and Uganda Tourism Board, the Operators in the Hotel and Tourism Industry appealed to government to set up a tourism fund that will ensure an effective response to emergencies in the sector. The President of Uganda Hotel Owners Association, Susan Muhwezi said the outbreak of COVID19 opened many eyes including those in the tourism Industry.

📌A research survey conducted by the Uganda Media Women Association (UMWA) in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives has revealed that gender gaps still persist as regards portray of women both as news sources and news subjects. The study is part of the seven-month gender responsiveness project which intends to enhance women’s visibility and portray the media content and programming in Uganda. The survey team led by the UMWA Executive Director Margret Ssentamu Masagazi found out that 28% of women were reportedly news sources and subjects in the year 2022 as opposed to 72% of their male counterparts.

📌Government of Uganda has launched the fiscal policy to regulate public debt for five financial years (2021/2022-2025/2025).The State minister for Planning, Mr. Amos Lugoloobi while officiating the launch said the fiscal policy among others seeks to ensure that total public debt in nominal terms is reduced to below 50 per cent of the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by Financial Year 2025/2026.

📌Environmentalists have revealed the judiciary is in the advanced stages of establishing the Environmental Protection Division at the High Court to cater for the case backlog of environment-related cases. 📌 According to the State Minister for Defence, Jacob Oboth, Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) has made robust deployments by enhancing troop levels in each district of the Karamoja sub-region to curb cattle rustling. This follows a resolution of Parliament urging government to immediately stop cattle rustling and restore peace, security and stability in the sub-regions of Teso, Lango, Acholi, Karamoja, Bugisu and Sebei.

🇺🇬Government in final stages of hiring Gulu Logistics Hub operator

📌The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is in the final stages of hiring a private party to lease, develop and operate the multi-billion Gulu Logistics hub in Gulu City. Construction approximately Shs31 billion facility was completed in December 2021, after commencement in February 2020, and was meant to be in operation by early this year. Brian Asiimwe, the Project Coordinator of Gulu Logistics Hub from URC however said that the hub remained non-operational due to a number of challenges among them the need to hire a private operator.

🇺🇬Farmers in Acholi tipped to embrace commercial agriculture

📌while speaking at the commissioning of a multimillion agro-supermarket hub in Unyama A cell, Pece Laroo division, Gulu city this week, the State Minister for Northern Uganda Rehabilitation, Grace Kwiyucwiny asked farmers in Acholi sub-region to shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture to eradicate poverty and attract processing plants. She notes that through commercial agriculture, farmers will produce in bulk, thereby attracting investors ready to establish processing plants for value addition to agricultural produce.

📌Somali security forces backed by international partners killed 15 al-Shabab militants in a sting operation carried out in the area of Bulo Madina located in the Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia on Friday. The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism said in a statement issued in Mogadishu that the 15 al-Shabab militants had survived Wednesday’s joint operation in which the troops killed 49 al-Shabab fighters.

📌Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that an order five years ago to burn 6,400 live chicks imported from Kenya was wrong. The chicks, which were impounded at the Namanga border town, were set on fire in November 2017 on grounds that they were smuggled into Tanzania. Five years after the torching, the president said the action nearly soiled the historical relations between the two trading partners. “It was not a good way to handle such imports. Even chickens have the right to live,” she said when she addressed lawyers from the region.

📌The Kenyan government has halted the transportation and export of Kilifi baobabs to Georgia and ordered an investigation into how a foreign contractor received permission to transport the ancient trees out of the country. Kenya’s president, William Ruto, ordered the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to investigate whether Georgy Gvasaliya had the proper license to take the trees out of Kenya under the Nagoya protocol, an international agreement that governs the conditions for the export of genetic resources, which has been incorporated into Kenyan law.
